Outdoor Pet Products for Ferrets

My ferrets love to go outside, they love to dig, play and explore. As a ferret owner I am always looking for safe ways to take my ferrets outside. Over the years I have tried out several different outdoor pet product. Most of them are technically marketed for cats or small dogs, but they can and do work for ferrets and other small pets. I have complied a list of my favorite outdoor pet products that I use to take my ferrets outside. But before I get into the products, I want to briefly discuss two things, first ferrets can and do get fleas, ticks, and heartworm disease. If you are going to take your ferrets outside, I recommend discussing flea prevention for your ferrets with your vet. Secondly, I have included links to the products I discuss below. The links to products on Amazon are affiliate links. This means I may earn a commission should you chose make a purchase using my links.

Now, lets get onto the list of Outdoor Pet Products for Ferrets.

First on my list and probably my personal favorite is the Petco Brand - Good2Go Paws Up Reflective Gray Pet Stroller.

My ferrets absolutely love their stroller. We take walks regularly takes walks in the evening when the weather is nice and I use it every time we go to the vet. Taking them into the vets office in the stroller allows me to easily take them out one at at time to be examined and the large mesh windows allow me to monitor them for any adverse reactions after they receive their vaccines.

The pros of the stroller are:

  • Fully enclosed

  • Spacious

  • Easy to put up and take dowN

  • Great ventilation

  • Easy to clean

  • Great storage/pocket

The can honey say I could nit come up with any good cons

The next product on my list is the Outback Jack Outdoor Cat Enclosures For Indoor Cats

This products is great for allowing your ferrets to have plenty of space to play and run outside, while being fully enclosed in a space. I use this tent with my ferrets on a regular basis and they love it. One of the biggest pros is that the tent can be connected to a tunnel or tunnels, and you could even connect an additional tent. While the tent has many great features, there are a few cons to consider. The main one being the mesh. Some ferret will claw and bit at the mesh, which can result in a few issues. The first is a hole and the second is having your pets finger nail get stuck in the mesh. I did have this happen to Lucy, she was playing in the tent and her nail got stuck in the mesh. We had to cut her lose, which out tiny hole in the tent. Lucy was ok and was not hurt. We still use the tent, however, I strongly recommend supervising your ferrets at all times when they are in the tent. I have included a more detailed list of the pros and cons below.

The pros of the Outback Jack Tent are:

  • Spacious

  • Fully enclosed

  • Great ventilation

  • Easy to clean

  • Easy to assemble and disassemble

The cons are:

  • Nails can get stuck

  • Need to be supervised entire time

  • A little Expensive

The Third item on my list is the You & Me Run & Play Space Small Animal Playpen, Large

This play yard is a good product for small pets, the bar spacing, the directions of the bars and the height are all appropriate for use with small pets. The main advantage to this play yard is that it can be made larger or smaller. One play yard comes with 6 panels, which provides a decent amount of space. However, I ended up buying two play yards and connecting them together so my ferrets would have a larger space to play. The play yard is also great to use in ferret proofing. I often find that I take it apart and use the panels to block doorways or other areas that I need to keep my ferrets out of.

The pros of the You & Me Play Yard are:

  • Bar spacing is appropriate for most small pets

  • Big enough for 2 ferrets to play

  • Excellent ventilation

  • Easy to assemble/ take down

  • Can be made smaller or larger

  • Great for blocking various area

The cons of the play yard are:

  • Expensive

  • Heavy

  • Probably need two

  • Young/small ferrets may be able to get under or through

  • Should be left alone

The fourth product and another one of my favorites is the Apollo walker Pet Carrier Backpack.

I cannot say enough about this product. It is very spacious and has excellent ventilation. The only issues I have with the backpack is the lack of storage. If you are going hiking or on any sort of outing you would have to bring a separate bag to carry any items you may need for you or your pets. In addition, if your ferret or small pet has a habit of digging or chewing mesh, this backpack may not be the best for you. The mesh on this backpack is very thick and well made, but I would not feel confident to say that it could not be torn or ripped if a pet was digging or chewing it.

The pros of the Apollo Backpack are:

  • Spacious

  • Sturdy Bottom

  • Easy to assemble

  • Easy to put pets in and take them out

  • Great Ventilation

  • Reasonably priced

The cons of the backpack are:

  • Bulky

  • No storage

  • Could be hard to clean

The fifth method I use for taking my ferrets outside is the figure 8 harness. I have tried many many collars and harness over the years for my ferrets, and the figure 8 harness has been the best so far. I can not find any cons to this harness other than is can be difficult for me to walk all four of my ferrets at one time. You can purchase these harness from several sellers on Etsy.
